The top of the list has to be dorky Snoop Dogg. The rapper has apparently decided that he’s old enough to not care about being cool and is willing to be dorky as an Olympics correspondent for NBC this past summer, most notably, his use of Martha Stewart for comfort while covering equestrian events because he’s afraid of horses and she’s apparently (of course) his good friend. The dorky persona seems to also extend to his commercials for T-Mobile and I just love that behind the whole supercool, supertough guy from the 90s there’s a guy who’s willing to be a nerd.
And if I’m wrong about this, just shut up, I don’t care.
In film, I really enjoyed Poor Things, a demented take on Frankenstein with the brain of a baby being implanted into an adult woman’s body and an absolutely bonkers production design that created a steampunk world that was a delight to see on screen.
In the world of television, I’m going to go with Interior Chinatown if only for the joy of seeing more Jimmy O. Yang. I haven’t gotten to the Charles Yu novel yet, by I loved his first novel, How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe.
And finally, in rank consumerism, I bought an Aura digital picture frame for my mom for Christmas this year and was really impressed with both the quality of the image and the ease of setting things up—in particular, I had expected I’d need to write my own code to automatically have it updated with the shared album that I used to share pictures of my kids with family but it turns out that their app will do that properly on its own. I like it so much, I’m buying one for myself as well.
